In 1955 James Dean became the first actor to ever receive a posthumous Best Actor Oscar nomination, for his role in "East of Eden". As usual, it was a tough field. Dean was up against Ernest Borgnine, James Cagney, Frank Sinatra and Spencer Tracy. Borgnine, however, took home the award for his portrayal of the middle-aged butcher "Marty".
