In the early ‘70s, #EastTimor was still Portuguese Timor and #Dili, the capital, was Timor’s 'big city'. It was still firmly on the Asia Overland ‘Hippie Trail' from London to Australia and had the country’s only gas station. While making the trek from Darwin to Bali, LP founders Tony and Maureen stayed at this open beachfront shed, graced with a small painted sign that said it was the “Hippy Hilton”. This was the place to unroll your sleeping bag on a concrete floor for less than a dollar a night. It’s long gone, although the Wheelers, early backpackers and the Timorese alike still fondly remember this old metal-roofed ‘beach house’. #1974 #TBT #ThrowbackThursday #LonelyPlanet #StillTravelling
