#InstagramMeansToMe Instagram changed my life. I know that sounds sort of dramatic, but in some sense it’s true. By the fall of 2011 I had left a corporate job and a broken heart far behind in Idaho. I raised funding on Kickstarer for a project and I was ready to traverse the entire US, all 50 states, for 1 year. My goal was to meet and tell the stories of everyday folks along the way. I wanted to celebrate their life. Not for what they had done. Or hadn’t done, but simply because they existed, because they mattered and were worthy. That documentary, This Wild Idea, was awarded National Geographic travel project of the year. That was easily one of the greatest honors of my life. But this story gets better! Because of this wonderful dog I know, Maddie. Right before I hit the road I rescued Maddie from a shelter in Atlanta. For the next 365 days, 24/7, she was right next to me in my pickup. We literally spent everyday together meeting folks, loving folks, and living the dream. The roots of the Maddie series, of discovering her amazing balance and patience, all started right here on @Instagram. Nearly everyday I would post an image of our adventures on the road. Instagram kept me inspired and connected. From all of this came a wonderful book published on @ChronicleBooks and some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever had. Now we’re about to hit the road and visit all 50 states on a book tour and new documentary #WhyWeRescue. We are so pumped that we get to meet all of ya’ll! This place is incredible not because of the App but because of the amazing content creators. The story tellers. Like @moneal and @chrisconnolly and @matthewdenis and you! Instagram flipped my world upside down. I’ll forever be grateful. Congrats to @Instagram for 100 million users. Pretty amazing ya’ll.
