"Ever seen a thresher shark before? Threshers are a relatively shy species known for their long, whip-like tails that often measure in at nearly half their body length. They can grow up to 20 feet, but are on average 14ft long. This one looks to be a bit shorter at roughly 10-12 feet. I’ve watched these sharks swim along the shoreline a few times before; either slashing through schools of fish, or cruising in calm surf, but this was the first time I’ve captured one from the drone. They weaponize their tails like trebuchets, slinging the tail-tip over their heads to stun prey at an average speed of 30mph (the fastest recorded speed is 80mph). I often find solitary, uncommon species like this when I’m flying back from filming something else or aimlessly scanning the shoreline. So far I’ve discovered species like marlin, sunfish, hammerheads, sandbar sharks, sand tiger sharks, and now a thresher this way."
