What they might not know is that for a month this fall, it was the home of an exhibit titled “On Earth As It Is In Heaven” by @christuanjoycostumes, a visual artist and costume designer for the likes of Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santigold, and Childish Gambino. The area echoes memories of her early beginnings in the city, working at a photo stock company and a vintage boutique and going on to land a position at Daryl K on 6th Street. “[Daryl K] was the downtown New York designer,” Joy recalls to V. “All the cool girls went there. I ended up meeting people that were more like the people I wanted to know.” It was at Daryl K's counter where she connected with icons like Kim Gordon and Karen O, leading to a friendship and her first creation—a slashed prom dress worn by Karen O at an early Yeah Yeah Yeahs performance.
