Penning a biography about iconic photographer Peter Beard, Chris has always felt inspired by the art form. Following his completion of “Twentieth-century Man” in 2021, he decided to try his hand at taking photos professionally. “Maybe because not a lot of other people were traveling at the time, I was able to beg, borrow, and steal a few commissions for travel writing and photography stories. Somehow, I've been lucky enough to keep doing that in the years since,” he recently shared with T+L. . Chris’ approach to shooting on trips: “I spend a lot of time seeking out all sorts of references for tone and type — prepping, moodboarding, making shot lists, watching movies. But when I’m on the ground, I just get out of the way of instinct,” he says. “Surely, the homework informs what I respond to, but one of the reasons I was drawn to photography is because of how different it is from the overly-analytical practice of writing. Instead of sitting sedentary in my room, overdeveloping my critical faculties, photography is a more meditative process. It gives me permission to get up and run around, chasing pretty light and little moments that catch my attention.” . When asked about his advice for aspiring photographers, he says, “Do it, a lot. And look at, read, consume a lot of what has come before. Keep filling up your inspiration box and exercising the output muscle.” .
