Curator @yona.lesger: We were lucky enough to have Stephen Jones OBE open the exhibition with a talk on his experiences of working in the industry. He made the first piece for the 2007 film Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Jones worked closely with costume designer Alexandra Byrne and actress Cate Blanchett to create Tudor-inspired diadems, tiaras, and gable hoods. This headdress has a unique structure, designed to sit directly in Elizabeth I’s heart-shaped wig. Its delicate filigree was inspired by one of Queen Elizabeth I’s lace ruffs. I used water-etched brass to make it into armour, and a symbol of British might. Stephen Jones OBE The second piece was part of Dior’s 2023 Cruise Collection and pays homage to the famous Andalusian Cordovan hat. Made of natural straw, hand-woven in Ecuador, it was created by Jones in collaboration with Spanish hatmakers Fernández y Roche (known for hand-crafted hats). Cordovan hats protect the wearer against the sun and rain and have been a part of Andalusia’s culture since the 19th century, worn by horse riders, flamenco dancers, and bullfighters.
