This was a labour of love, celebrating artisans, craftspeople, Prabal’s heritage, identity and roots and bringing a little bit of his world to yours for Diwali.
More than 100k crystals, stones, and crystal chains were hand embroidered in India by 25 artisans for 450 person-hours on this midnight velvet Sherwani made in New York.
Prabal said, “It’s rare that I indulge in something so elaborate. My job as a designer is to service my clients and ensure they are happy. In that rigmarole, sometimes I lose track of myself and, inadvertently, my joy. So, this Diwali, in particular, I wanted to celebrate joy and give you a glimpse of the world that I was fortunate to grow up in - one that keeps me grateful and grounded.”
As Vogue mentioned “Gurung shared his deep appreciation for Diwali, stating, ‘In precarious, challenging, and divisive times where so many of us are perplexed and grappling for hope, I believe that joy is the ultimate resistance to all the hate for it’s deeply rooted in hope. And hope and optimism is the first step towards change.’ Gurung, whose connection to Diwali runs deep, further added, ‘Diwali is one of my favourite holidays. Growing up in India and Nepal, this festival, which goes on for several days, is really a celebration of love, light, and hope with family and friends.’”
