Mr. Leroy Walker’s son Joey was one of the 18 Lewiston shooting victims. As a father to a son myself, seeing this father’s tear stained shirt and hearing him speak about the murder of his son rendered me motionless. As have the countless images of the anguish of parents in Gaza and Isreal. There is so much collective pain. So many want to make sense of it. Do something, anything to understand and help. In these moments I always search out wisdom from folks much smarter than me. My go-to is usually James Baldwin and his profound insight: “I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”
Everywhere we turn, pain confronts us- Political, Moral, Racial, Religious, Economic, Historical— On our screens, in conversations with friends, neighbors, colleagues, its presence is undeniable. We have different points of view, different relationships to the situations. And while everything these days feels raw and immediate, it’s not a new phenomenon; it’s a persisting echo of past sorrows and longstanding conflicts and our collective inabilities to solve deep and complex problems. Our duty, especially now, is to muster the moral and political courage to lead with empathy, love, care, and peace. Despite the darkness, there exists an alternative path — a better way. The heart-wrenching images of wounded children from Gaza, the fear and pain palpable among Israeli families grappling with loss, the sorrow visible in Leroy Walker’s eyes above, and the mournful current tales from the Congo that don’t receive their due media attention — are all testament to a world in dire need of compassion and action. The fact that since 2020 Gun violence is the number one killer of young people in our country should give us all pause and then a desire to act. When we fight for peace everywhere- We all, ultimately win. As Baldwin also writes: “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
Thank you Mr. Walker for your humanity, may we all follow your lead. I am so sorry for your loss. May God bless your son and may he rest in peace. 🕊️🕊️🕊️
