Just a few days after my trip, at least 125 river dolphins died in the Brazilian Amazon because of a devasting drought that is developing across the region. Forests habitats, nature and people are experiencing the catastrophic effects of climate change RIGHT NOW.    On my journey, I had the privilege of meeting inspirational local community members who are protecting the Amazon. They are forming forest brigades, farming more sustainably and leading wildlife monitoring projects for endangered species such as jaguars and river dolphins.  We will not reach our global goals on deforestation without local and Indigenous people like this.    Despite numerous pledges and declarations to protect our forests by our world leaders and decision makers - deforestation rates are not coming down fast enough. Our forests are heading for a future in which they are emptied of wildlife, damaged by climate change and increasingly pressured by wildfires, development and unsustainable food systems.    We have just seven years to meet the global goals of halting and reversing deforestation.
