Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani
An installation piece made of deconstructed sounds and images used in the opera “LIFE”(1999).  The opera LIFE was a requiem for the 20th century and a vision for the 21st century, made with music, words, images, and body movements on the themes of war and revolution, science and technology, and of coexistence. In the act of converting the opera into an installation format, the artists became additionally interested in exploring the boundaries between various perceptible and imperceptible things as expressed in the subtitle “fluid, invisible, inaudible.", resulting in the work involving fog.
The fragments of images and sounds are divided into 20-30 groups according to a taxonomical system used in the study of natural history. The experience created by the twelve units of sounds and images that never play in the same combination, differs from conventional and linear experiences of time.

Installation view, LIFE - fluid, invisible, inaudible..., Ryuichi Sakamoto + Shiro Takatani, ‘seeing sound, hearing time’, courtesy M WOODS HUTONG, Beijing, 2021.
