What a whirlwind this London Film Festival has been. As ever, it is vitally important to shout out to the hardworking @britishfilminstitute team and all the festival staff and volunteers who make it look effortless (Hint: it isn’t).

Aside from the Screen Talk I moderated with Martin Scorsese, I got to see packed screenings on the big screen of Emerald Fennell’s devilishly fun ‘Saltburn’, Fincher’s ice cold ‘The Killer’, Jeff Nichols rumble-tastic ‘The Bikeriders’, the intense ride that is Kitty Green’s ‘The Royal Hotel’ and the glorious screwball noir ‘Hit Man’ from Richard Linklater and star and co-writer @グレン・パウエル.

Then, after the momentous Scorsese day and magnificent gala for ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’; it was a @FILM4 double bill with Andrew Haigh’s gorgeous and devastating ‘All Of Us Strangers’, followed by my good friend Miss Thomasin Mackenzie in the startling, twisty ‘Eileen’. Then I chased Bradley Cooper’s swooningly realised biopic ‘Maestro’ with my pal Michel Franco’s intimate and fascinating ‘Memory’. The next day brought Annette Bening vs the box jellyfish epic that is ‘Nyad’, followed by Molly Manning Walker’s startling debut ‘How To Have Sex’. And then, a perfect hilarious humanist comedy double bill of Lukas Moodyson’s ‘Together 99’ and Alexander Payne’s ‘The Holdovers’.

Thursday, I saw Matt Smith lose his damn mind in folk horror ’Starve Acre’ and then I was utterly floored by the disturbing formalist masterpiece that is Jonathan Glazer’s ‘The Zone Of Interest’. On Friday, even I was mortal and had to take a day out and have a lie down.

Last night, a glorious screening of Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s brilliantly berserk ‘Poor Things’, a high wire act of madness somewhere between Hammer Horror, Ken Russell and Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. This is the highest praise.

Tonight? The world premiere of Kibwe Tavares and Daniel Kaluuya’s ’The Kitchen’. And then? I will never watch another film again.*

Well done again to all of the #lff2023 staff of the festival, all at the BFI who’ve made it a treat and to the receptive audiences who remind us all that there’s nothing better than seeing a great film with a crowd.

(*This is not binding).
