October 6th is Manufacturing Day and that makes me think about skilled trades. When we think about skilled trades, we don’t often think high tech. Skilled trade workers are often on the cutting edge of high tech through the tools they use, and the equipment needed to stay safe. Skilled trade workers are a crucial part of our society and beyond. Their specialized knowledge and abilities are essential for constructing and maintaining the infrastructure of our built world, such as buildings, roads, and utilities. But it goes beyond Earth. Skilled trade workers are indispensable in the space industry as they bring essential technical expertise for building, maintaining, and operating spacecraft and related infrastructure. As humanity goes from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) back to the Moon and onto Mars, skilled workers will contribute to critical areas such as assembling spacecraft, managing launch operations, and maintaining equipment, ensuring that projects are executed efficiently and safely. This is why @3M（スリーエム） ’s commitment to creating five million unique skilled trades and STEM learning experiences for underrepresented individuals by the end of 2025 is so important. I know the future I want to help build and it starts with creating a skilled workforce that is diverse, and inclusive space so that all of humanity can boldly go where no human has gone before.
