Credit to @oleskycraig #TodayInBluesHistory. Texas blues guitarist and singer/songwriter Freddie King was born in Gilmer, TX. on September 3, 1934. An influential blues musician often mentioned as one of the Three Kings of the Blues with BB and Albert. His mother and uncle taught him to play guitar at age 6. His main early influences were Eddie Taylor, Jimmy Rogers and Robert Lockwood, Jr. In 1949, his family moved from Dallas to the South Side of Chicago. As soon as he arrived, he began sneaking into South Side blues clubs to hear Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, T-Bone Walker, Elmore James and Sonny Boy Williamson. He combined the Texas and Chicago Blues to give his music a more contemporary sound. Freddie formed his first band, the Every Day Blues Boys in 1952. He released his first single Country Boy in 1956, and signed with Federal Records in 1960, where most of his big hits were recorded. Hide Away, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, I'm Tore Down, Lonesome Whistle Blues and Christmas Tears were all written under the Federal banner. During his career he would also record for Cobra, Cotillion, Shelter and RSO Records into the mid 1970's. Freddie was a huge influence on Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia, Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Billy Gibbons, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. Derek once said, "Freddie is truly one of the all-time greats. He was one of those guys who seemed to be able to summon this limitless energy. When it was time to go, he had another gear that most men just do not have." Inducted into the Blues HOF (1982) and the Rock & Roll HOF (2012).
