One of the most fascinating aspects of sperm whales is their unique sleeping behavior. Unlike humans, who sleep in short, consolidated periods, sperm whales sleep for short intervals throughout the day and night. These power naps typically last for about 10 to 20 minutes. However, they also engage in longer bouts of sleep that can last for several hours, known as "logging." During these periods of rest, sperm whales adopt a vertical position in the water, drifting slowly towards the surface. This is an awe-inspiring sight to witness, as the immense creatures appear to be suspended in the water, completely at ease in their underwater sanctuary.
