Peanuts is 73 years old today! The first Peanuts comic strip debuted on this day in 1950 and featured Patty, Shermy, and "Good ol’ Charlie Brown!"
Peanuts fans are often surprised to discover that in the early comic strips, Charlie Brown did not yet have his iconic zig-zag shirt, and Snoopy walked on all fours. During those early years, Charles M. Schulz used bold black lines to craft his characters and compositions, showcasing the aspirations of a young man who had dreamt of becoming a cartoonist since childhood.
"I wanted a strip that was successful, not only commercially, but good artistically so that I would have the respect of fellow craftsmen. I'm pleased that phrases I have coined have become part of the language. And I think Snoopy and Charlie Brown will be remembered.” —Charles M. Schulz, 1968
