Remarkably, we share 98.3% of our genetic code with these incredible animals! The gorilla population has been declining for decades, primarily due to their low reproductive rate. A female gorilla typically gives birth to only 3 to 4 offspring in her lifetime, underscoring the urgent need for gorilla conservation. Rwanda is a leader in this area, with their annual Kwita Izina being a way to bring awareness to these astounding creatures and preserve and protect them. Danai visited Rwanda to attend the Business of Conservation Conference in Kigali and the Kwita Izina Gorilla Naming Ceremony at Volcanoes National Park. During the latter event, she was honoured with the opportunity to name one of the 23 baby gorillas born in the last year. With great affection, she chose the name Aguka T'Challa as a touching tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Aguka is the gorilla’s Rwandan name, meaning Expansion. 🙏 Three years after Chadwick’s passing, Danai wished to honor his memory, and the timing of the ceremony was especially significant as it took place during his memorial week. During her speech, Danai's beautiful tribute was made clear by the following statement. "...my dear brother Chadwick Boseman, whose love and appreciation for this continent shines brightly in the legacy that he left behind."
