My Grandmother was born behind this door, in this little stone farm house, with no electricity or running water. She came to the United States on a boat with my great grandparents, and entered into what would become her home country through the storied lines at Ellis Island. And just two generations later, this image of my mother and I standing in her mother’s birth place was captured on the tiny computer I carry around in my pocket after my family and I took an airplane thousands of miles back to our country of origin, to stand here and visit our family that descended from our same roots. What can happen over the span of three generations takes my breath away. As does the way a place can feel like home, in your bones, the moment you return.
