How do you define comfort? In the 1970s, designer Bill Stumpf laid out his own criteria for comfort—in part inspired by philosopher and writer William Gass who defined comfort as a “lack of awareness.” This research led to designing the world’s first ergonomic work chair—aptly named Ergon—and revolutionized office seating. Stumpf would go on to transform the industry a few more times and Herman Miller would go on to pioneer the discipline of ergonomics in the seating market.
