I’m SO excited to finally share this animation! I recently went on an Expedition with @ナショナルジオグラフィック to French Polynesia. We sailed through the South Pacific to the remote Marquesas islands, and took a journey into the land & its cultures - discovering what makes each island so special. Creatively I wanted to challenge myself to go on an artistic journey as well. I took in the land, the ocean, the people, the culture, the history, the music, the food, and the crafts to create the story of this piece. I challenged myself to develop a new skillset and style by teaching myself to animate on my iPad. Yes, this entire piece was hand illustrated & animated on the iPad!! It was time consuming to make and challenging to get right, but I am so incredibly proud of myself for taking the time & effort to create this piece - to best respect & honor the people of Polynesia. As we arrived to Nuka Hiva the community performed a beautiful dance & sang this song, “Haka Manu” - The Bird Song Dance. I recorded them singing, and much of their performance inspired this creation. Also, I was fortunate to be on the ship with Tua Pittman, an acclaimed traditional master navigatgor from the Cook Islands, who has sailed the world without the use of modern instruments. Continuing the tradition of guiding their canoe by stars, the Polynesian Voyaging Society have sailed on multiple journeys to share their culture of Polynesia to people around the world. This piece is my contribution to their effort, to artistically celebrate the people of Polynesia & share the story of their culture & voyages through my art. I am forever grateful that I was able to join National Geographic on this Expedition, and thankful that it sparked a creative light that inspired me to make this piece!
