#OTD 176 years ago, Maj. Levi Twiggs and 40 U.S. #Marines and 250 soldiers from General Scott’s Army stormed the fortress palace of #Chapultepec, Mexico City’s defense sitting atop a 200-foot hill.

On the morning of 13 September 1847, Scott ordered the infantry attack after three hours of American bombardment. General Lopez de Santa Anna, the commander of the Mexican forces, watched the Americans take Chapultepec and Mexico City fell to Scott’s army on 15 September.

The Marines suffered 30 casualties during the engagement, and the legend of the Marine NCO “blood stripe” memorializes the Marines’ actions at the Battle of Chapultepec.
