Happy Birthday to our beloved founder Elsa Schiaparelli, who was born on this day in 1890.

We celebrate her path of beauty and inventive entrepreneurship, leading us to define Elsa as the woman who shaped the foundation of the fashion system.

In her earlier years, Elsa was an aspiring writer whose style veered too erotic for her time. She shifted her interest towards fashion and moved to Paris. One day, looking at antiques, Elsa’s eye fell on a strange pullover: “It was not beautiful but it fell on the body in a particular way”. With an Armenian knitter, she launched a collection of trompe l’œil pulls that not only dressed all of Paris, but were requested “en masse” for the American market.

The success allowed Elsa to open her first atelier at 4, rue de la Paix. Schiaparelli began to delve into sportswear and beachwear, which proved popular and profitable. In 1935, she opened the Salons at 21, Place Vendôme, the historical address steeped in Haute Couture. Elsa, thinking beyond tradition, added the idea of Ready-to-Wear and introduced a window so the insides of the Schiaparelli boutique faced the piazza, bringing surrealist fantasy to the sidewalk.

Royalty and movie stars visited the atelier for couture fittings, while streams of fans bought tights, makeup, and above all, perfumes. Schiaparelli created an empire of fragrances led by her Shocking Perfume, with its sensual silhouette based on Mae West’s measurements, designed with artist Leonor Fini.

The S on nearly all her fragrances and her use of the number 4 on her personal jewelry is credited to Elsa’s superstitious beliefs; the most obvious sign of her esoteric thinking.

Schiaparelli was a trailblazer in blending art and fashion. She collaborated on fashion with Salvator Dalì, on interiors with Jean Michael Frank and Alberto Giacometti. Her ad campaigns were illustrated by Vèrtes and Berard, and her portraits photographed by Man Ray, Horst P. Horst, and Cecil Beaton.

This was her life; a single woman stronger than most men, who was joyous while working with avant-garde artists.
Today, @danielroseberry continues the artistic collaboration through an ongoing conversation with Elsa’s inventive heritage.
