During the Ottoman era, when coffee was a relatively new drink, it doubled as a good place to hide poison. The technique of dipping a finger into the coffee and then into water, and observing how it dissolves, became a clever way to see if the coffee was poisoned 🪤⁣

Another tradition, as explained by a local guide, revolves around hospitality. When a guest visited someone’s home, they were offered a cup of coffee and a dessert. If the guest ate the dessert first, it signified hunger. If they drank the coffee first, it meant they were not hungry. So instead of asking directly, there was this polite, indirect way of communicating hunger levels. The host would proceed to serve the guest food 🍽️⁣
