@theeasternphilosophy —Yingge Wu is a traditional Chinese art form known as the “Dance of Heroes,” originating from the Ming Dynasty. It combines dance, martial arts, and Chinese opera, featuring rhythmic wooden stick strikes. Recently, it gained popularity in China due to viral videos, but it remains relatively unknown in the West. The dance symbolizes warding off evil, bringing peace, and welcoming spring, with 36 performers representing heroes from the classic Chinese novel “Water Margin.” Young performers undergo rigorous training, and the art form is passed down through generations, including all-women’s troupes and hip-hop adaptations for international competitions.

Have you ever seen Yingge Wu in person?
