Carmichael fought off CRF450R-riding Kevin Windham in both motos to go 1-1 and win his 14th and 15th motos of the summer and his 9th overall victory of the season. He also clinched his 4th consecutive championship in the class, which also became the final title for a 250cc two stroke. 20 years after the fact, that all seems crazy, especially considering that James Stewart joined the class in 2005, riding a KX250. Not only did Stew not win any overalls that summer, he didn't even get a moto win. In 14 motos raced, he was on the podium 7 times. Back to 2003: Steel City wasn't supposed to be the final race of that season.
