Jamie Reid, artist and designer for the Sex Pistols, and one of my earliest influences, has died. Jamie almost single-handedly defined the aesthetics of punk with his ransom note style cut-and-paste lettering and irreverent subversion of various iconography. His best known images are the “God Save the Queen” single cover and the Never Mind the Bollocks Here’s the Sex Pistols album cover, but he created many other great images and an entire visual language for the Sex Pistols which seemed to me like the perfect counterpart to the ferocious, snarling music and lyrics of the band. For me, the Sex Pistols were not just a band, but an example of art as cultural upheaval who blew the doors open for punk and an entire Do-It-Yourself movement. Jamie demonstrated to me that great art and graphics were not about virtuosity, but about the potency of an image and idea that strike a chord and are instantly provocative and memorable. I was able to interview Jamie in the early 2000s for While You Were Sleeping magazine, and he was a charming and intelligent guy. Later we collaborated on some art based on our mutual admiration for the Occupy Wall Street movement as well as our shared belief that it’s time to stop destroying the planet. I’m incredibly grateful that I was able to collaborate with Jamie. Thanks for the inspiration Jamie!
