In high school, however, I had engaging biology and chemistry teachers who opened my eyes to the beauty of the sciences. When considering university programs, biochemistry caught my attention as being a little bit extraordinary. It had the stigma of being difficult. I like to push the boundaries and see what I’m capable of, so I took it as a challenge.    I’ve had the opportunity to work under the talented scientists at Abbott over past two summers while attending college. Last summer at Abbott, I helped develop hepatitis B and mpox tests. This summer, I'm performing next-generation sequencing, which is a breakthrough technology in this field. We can read a genome in a matter of hours – something that used to require months or years of manual work. We can see if a new viral strain is emerging before it becomes a pandemic. That’s the whole goal of the Abbott Pandemic Defense Coalition, to help shield the world in this way.    Many are discouraged from entering a scientific field because they have the impression that it’s too difficult. I would encourage you to pursue your interest in spite of this perception and perhaps discover your passion."    - Christiane Carlos is an Abbott fellow currently working with next-generation sequencing to monitor potential viral threats.
