At that meeting we met Chief Raoni, an elder of the indigenous Kayapo tribe. He was fighting to protect his people and his forest from the rampant land-grabbing that was taking place all around. His wisdom and understanding were profound, his vision for the future uncompromising, and he asked us to help deliver his message to the rest of the world. That message was: “There is a lot of smoke. My people are very sick. But whatever happens in the rainforest today, will affect all of you, in your homes, tomorrow.” And how devastingly right he was. That meeting with Raoni inspired us to begin our Rainforest Foundation – now the Rainforest Fund. We went around the world with Raoni, helping him to deliver his message, and we succeeded in having an area of rainforest the size of Switzerland demarcated and protected. This legal process to recognise indigenous land and protect it became the basis for the Rainforest Fund’s work across the globe for the following 34 years, as we inform and support indigenous forest people in their fight to protect their homes. 34 years on, we can dare to hope that there is a shift taking place. The world is waking up to reality as we find ourselves on the brink of environmental catastrophe. Indigenous rights in Brazil are being recognised and supported at Government level. The indigenous peoples'' role in protecting their forest lands - for themselves and for all of us - is being understood and valued.
