I am proud to have been elected to and served on the National Board of SAG-AFTRA, which is a member of the great AFL-CIO. For so many actors and creatives, Hollywood isn’t a place to make millions – it’s a place where people scrape by. And what’s happening right now isn’t just about the entertainment industry. Our SAG President is right when she says this is what happens “when employers make Wall Street and greed their priority and they forget about the essential contributors that make the machine run.” Because the truth is, the labor movement is the heart of economic success in America. At points in the nation’s history when labor unions are strong, the middle class is strong and the gap between rich and poor is narrow. At points when politicians weaken the right to organize, resulting in lower union membership, inequality goes up and the middle class shrinks. That’s exactly what we’re seeing now, in essentially every single industry across our economy. The number of CEO’s earning salaries that are 1000 times more than their median employees – that number has never been higher. But working people in our country are not taking this lying down. Over the past few years, we’ve seen an incredible outpouring of organizing, across so many sectors of our economy. A new wave of working people stepping up and building power together. So I’m proud to strike alongside the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, to try and level the playing field. And I’ll be honest: this is why I’m running for U.S. Senate. You know, there isn’t a single card-carrying union member in the U.S. Senate right now. During a moment when the labor movement is under attack across the nation, including by the Supreme Court and Republicans at every level, I think we need at least one U.S. Senator who’s currently a union member.
