Microbiologist, @tardibabe from Montreal, looking at Sand from different places through microscope.

Sand is a granular material consisting of minerals, with each particle having a diameter ranging from 0.0625 to 2.0 mm. The composition of sand varies significantly depending on factors such as environmental conditions, the source of the rocks, and biological processes. Silica, in the form of quartz, is the most common component of sand, followed by calcium carbonate derived from the exoskeletons of corals, shellfish, foraminifera, and other aquatic organisms.

Typically, sand originates from rocks that have been subjected to erosion or weathering by wind and water for extended periods, often spanning thousands or millions of years. Over time, these eroded sediments accumulate and can be carried by wind or water currents. If these rocks are located far from the ocean, they continue to undergo breakdown while being transported downstream by rivers or streams. Upon reaching the sea, they experience further erosion due to the action of waves and tides, resulting in the formation of sediment.
