Shoe etiquette: Japanese take their social customs very seriously and there are some basic rules that everyone is supposed to follow. Among these is the removal of shoes before going inside a home, business, temple -- Cleanliness is the major reason for this custom, and it also is a sign of respect. But the custom involves a bit more than just shedding shoes. Many places have a special spot inside the door that is reserved for shoe removal -- the genkan is a step-down area where shoes can be left, always pointing toward the door. Stocking-feet should not land on the genkan, but on the step up, where they can be eased into waiting slippers. When leaving, slippers are returned facing in the same place and direction they were found. All that is easy enough, but there are finer points to consider once inside -- slippers come off when walking on tatami mats and another set of slippers is used for visiting the bathroom. Bare feet are discouraged.
