“I think you could say that I’m fairly obsessed with materials and making things,” says @jamesmshaw, the designer best known for transforming extruded waste plastic into fun, contemporary forms. His latest project, his own self-built house, is grander in scale but similarly tackles a challenging proposition with wit, humour and a focus on the inherent beauty of materials.

James came across the plot near Bethnal Green while out running five years ago. It's pretty, quaint and not a place you would imagine finding an experimental upside-down sunken house built by a young designer interested in challenging conventional notions of beauty. But that is exactly what presents itself at the recently completed home, which James designed in collaboration with his architect friend Nicholas Ashby and which he has built almost entirely himself (with the exception of structural work and some tiling).
