This @Queensland island, formerly known as Fraser Island, is as of today, officially known as K’gari, the Butchulla peoples’ traditional name for the island 🥰💫
K’gari (pronounced with a silent K), comes from the Butchulla peoples’ creation story of the island, which has been passed down orally for generations.
K’gari is the name of the white spirit that was sent down from the sky by the god Beeral, to help his messenger Yindingie make the land and seas that are home to the Butchulla People.
The Butchulla people say that “K’gari is the female white spirit. She is beautiful to us; she is our mother. She provides food, water, and shelter and in return we protect and preserve her, as per the three (3) lores that Yindingie gave.”
