On Queens of The Stone Age debut album, the band established a sound that was dirty and raw, and with filled with mammoth riffs. With their second album, Josh Homme re-established their sound, but made sure it still payed homage to their stoner rock roots. This album is mellower, trippier, and more arranged than its predecessor while it makes it’s point through fuzz-guitar tones, ethereal harmonies, vibraphones, horns, and even the odd steel drum. Originally, some listeners and critics were taken back by the change, as it lacked the aggression of it’s predecessor, but with time this album has paved the way for the band to reach the masses. “Rated R” is still got the California-desert vibes of Kyuss, but it evokes a more relaxed and spacious feel.
