Ms. Blacksmith Goes to Washington!

#Throwback to two weekends ago in DC, when the @thecreativecoalition invited me to join their advocacy for the #RightToBearArts and protect funding for the @neaarts.

My biggest takeaway was that we, as storytellers, we can afford to do a better job of communicating what we mean when we talk about the vital need for and usefulness of “the arts” in our communities. So often, the arts are seen as a luxury, an afterthought. However, if we utilize these tools wisely, we can transcend politics and address vital needs in our schools & communities—
* We spoke with Representative Suzanne Bonamici (Oregon) about getting parents more involved with arts programs in their kids’ schools to increase communication between parents, teachers and students - this was something my folks did, and it gave us a chance to get to know each other better
