This stunning serpent is an endangered San Francisco garter snake. Faced with numerous threats including habitat loss, the pet trade, predation by introduced species, and lack of food sources (like the California red-legged frog), this snake was one of the first species to be listed as endangered after the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973. These non-venomous snakes feed almost entirely on small frogs, but they are also one of just a few animals capable of eating the toxic California newt. During dry summer months when prey is hard to find, San Francisco garter snakes will sometimes go into a dormant state, using rodent burrows for shelter. On the coast, this species will hibernate during the winter, but farther inland, they may be active year-round. Photo taken @exmoorzoo.
