When our Freer Gallery of Art opened 100 years ago, live peacocks roamed the courtyard.🦚

The birds resembled the décor of James McNeill Whistler's Peacock Room, a highlight of the new gallery—the Smithsonian’s first art museum on the National Mall. They were from @スミソニアン国立動物園, and remained fixtures in the Freer courtyard in the warm months of the 1920s, when this @smithsonianarchives photo was taken.
