Getting into this movie got me got me into Ralph Bakshi. Then, I watched “Fire & Ice”, which was a collaboration between Bakshi and Frank Frazetta and I got into Frazetta. After looking up more fantasy artists, I got into Roger Dean. It’s pretty neat how one piece of art can lead you to another. It’s also pretty neat that the opening sequence in Heavy Metal, “Soft Landing” - the semi-famous one with the astronaut in a Corvette in space - was based on a comic by Dan O’Bannon, who wrote the screenplay for the original Alien, worked on John Carpenter’s feature directorial debut Dark Star, and who was going to work on the special effects for Jodorowsky’s Dune had it ever been made, etc. In case you were wondering, the opening trailers on this VHS tape are: Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s The City of Lost Children (1995), Crumb (1994) - a documentary on underground cartoonist R. Crumb (interestingly a film that is “presented by David Lynch”, even though he had no actual involvement in making the film. Apparently he agreed to give the use of his name to help promote it.) and a movie called The Last Supper (1995) - which I’m only just hearing about now after seeing the trailer for first time. Heavy Metal came out in ‘81 but this tape was printed and distributed in ‘96. All these movies had just been released to home video. All the trailers are seemingly locked in time and always will be forever, whenever I play this tape. It’s so cool. Also, Taarna is such a bad ass (my favorite scene is where she knocks out one of the barbarians whilst animated space-Devo are playing.) The whole Taarna story was based on Arzach by Moebius - another amazing legendary fantasy artist. If you make it to the bottom of this post, recommend me other tapes to get.」4月26日 15時32分 - danz_cm
