Plate corals compete for space on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, by some measures the largest living organism on earth. UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee recently recommended that the reef be listed as “in danger” due to increased frequency of coral bleaching episodes caused by warming oceans—a direct result of human-caused climate change.
