Since the 1960s, long before the space station, astronauts have looked back and documented Earth’s wondrous beauty. Crews on station have continued this tradition, collecting a database containing millions of photos that showcase the Earth’s changing landscapes, oceans, and atmosphere. These images collected over decades can provide data for climate decisions and potentially help develop solutions to environmental issues.

On the outside of the space station instruments are able to collect a plethora of data to help inform researchers about the complex dynamics of the Earth’s atmospheric carbon cycle, how mineral dust affects the heating and cooling of the planet, and how plants adapt to a warming climate. By collecting details of the Earth’s temperature and precise measurements of the planet’s 3D structure, both researchers and citizens of Earth can have a better understanding of how to protect our planet for future generations to come!
