"As a proud Arab American currently based in Washington, D.C., I am so honored to be invited for the Disney/Pixar Artist Spotlight to celebrate Arab American Heritage Month.

I chose Bambino from “La Luna” as my inspiration for this painting. When he travels up the ladder to see the moon and the stars, it reminds me of one night I will never forget.

My family and I were forced to leave Lebanon during the war, and we ended up in Greece. We had been under curfew in Beirut, so when we got to Athens and could be outside safely, I clearly remember looking up and seeing this enormous moon as if for the first time.

Looking at the moon that night — after leaving everything, including my father, behind — I felt a sense of hope for the future and the possibility of being able to return home one day.

I imagine little Bambino sweeping those stars from the moon, and that they each hold wishes and dreams for people everywhere, even if they are facing adversity or are in difficult situations." – Helen Zughaib, artist #ArabAmericanHeritageMonth
