The reason why music history is SO important to me is because for one: black history IS AMERICAN HISTORY. & for a lot of us the day to day/fight or flight challenges of life often overshadow things like “if we document this rehearsal for this gig we got coming up, will this mean ANYTHING to someone 40 years from now?!” Or simply “is this art?” I document rehearsals mostly so I can figure out the show cause it’s hard to play and be objective to what works and what doesn’t work. But at no time am I thinking “is this meaningless soundcheck from 19nlahblahah gonna mean ANYTHING 50 years from now?” The answer fellow musicians is YES. We gotta get in the practice of documenting life because in 10 secs from documenting it becomes HISTORY. & oftentimes there is hardly documentation of anything because we aren’t taught to treat anything we do as ART. We ain’t saying “one day this will enlighten the world”—— Man.
