An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective birth control and emergency contraception (EC). The IUD is over 99% effective at preventing unintended pregnancy when inserted 5 days after unprotected sex/birth control failure. Copper IUDs and some hormonal IUDs can work as EC, like Paraguard, Mirena, or Liletta.

Once an IUD is placed in the uterus, it can prevent pregnancy for several years depending on the type you get. People using an IUD as EC don’t have to worry about weight cutoffs like with the Plan B pill. EC will NOT work for people who are already pregnant.
