People throw around the term “visionary” a bit casually, but in the case of Seymour, there is no more appropriate term… unless there’s a term I don’t know that applies to auditory genius. Stein signed The Ramones, Talking Heads, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, and Dead Boys from the CBGB’s scene to Sire, and ultimately brought in The Replacements, The Pretenders, The Smiths, The Undertones, Echo & the Bunnymen, Ministry, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Ice-T, and biggest of all… Madonna! What we loosely call “alternative” music would not look or sound the same without Stein giving so many influential artist a platform. I met Seymour several times and he was always delightful… very smart and funny. I was on a panel with him once and I felt very lucky and unworthy to speak alongside him. I’d highly recommend Stein’s book “Siren Song” because it chronicles his journey, but most importantly illuminates his incredible passion for the artists he believed in.
