It’s very sad to post a tribute to a second member of Yellow Magic Orchestra in almost as many months, but the great Ryuichi Sakamoto, prolific Japanese musician, composer, and actor, has passed away today. He was a true pioneer in the electronic music genre and widely recognized as one of the most influential musicians of his time. His footprint also extends to the hundreds of times his work has been sampled too. For 45 years or more, he was a true innovator.

Of course in addition to Yellow Magic Orchestra and his solo work, Sakamoto was also a prolific film composer. He scored the soundtracks for The Last Emperor, which won him an Academy Award, Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence and The Revenant, among others.

I tried to interview him for ‘The Sparks Brothers’ as he was a noted fan, but it was not to be.

I am posting this 1978 performance of ‘Behind The Mask’ by Yellow Magic Orchestra at L.A’s Greek Theatre, for the second time this year (in January we sadly lost drummer and vocalist Yukhiro Takahashi) as it has become a piece of footage that always makes me happy and will continue to forever.

RIP Mr Sakamoto.
