Together our collaborations quickly went from simple remixes of songs to creating unique soundtracks for epic music theatre-like fashion shows. Season after season and year after year, Steve would walk into the studio - chic, always fashionable and pulled-together, tall, handsome and elegant, effortlessly cool, and immediately lovable. His arrival into the studio signaled about a weeks-worth of days and nights before a show. Inevitably, Katie and I would be gathered around countless boards of sketches, swatches, and photographs, as we worked to piece together threads of a still-evolving puzzle. At that point in the process - in my most heightened moments of fear, anxiety and doubt –with very little of the collection finished, Steve was able to synthesize what it was he was seeing – even in its abstract form. His quiet but confident, “This looks great, Marc” would give me a sense of calm and assurance. He would always begin our meetings by asking how or what I was feeling. In that easeful and polite Steve Mackey way, he was trying to get a sense of my mood and where I was emotionally. And when it came to our musical choices, no matter what they were, the moment would come when the models were dressed for their fitting and Steve would play a rough draft of the music. And when that music moment happened, with the models walking in their looks, it was then, with a smile from Katie, I knew that all would be right and the show would be great. The songs, the music, those moments. They’ll always be with me. I can still visualize, hear and feel the back and forth creative relationship I had with Steve.
