Katherine Dunham traveled the world in the 1940/50s bringing her research of caribbean dance and culture to the International stage. Dancer, choreographer, anthropologist and social activist, Katherine was a boundless expression of the feminine spirit. She is the ultimate muse then and now. Apart of my practice is finding women that I look up to. Those who embody the qualities that I love and admire. She was such a fearless explorer connecting with and learning from caribbean cultures to create works of art, movements and written work that are undeniably heartfelt, timeless and uniquely Katherine. I’ve started to realize that the women we look up to says a lot about who we are. I became more mindful of who and why I gravitate to certain female figures and often sit with what that says about my desires, needs and insecurities.
For me this Women’s Day feels different. What it means to be a women feels different for me now, as being feminine has never felt like a powerful thing in my eyes. Leaning into this feminine body and spirit honoring her as she was given. No longer looking at its weaknesses and limitations as such but rather the place that redirects us to where our power does lie. To all the women reading this …..relax, surrender, listen and remember you came here as a women, a living breathing portal of the divine and there is nothing more powerful than that. #internationalwomensday
