We’ve never experienced anything quite like what we did on Sunday on the parade route. Seeing the streets of Little Tokyo—all of the families, small businesses, and history was memorable and energizing. Thank you to the Nisei Week Foundation (@niseiweek) and the entire Japanese American community in Los Angeles for selecting us and welcoming us to this historic celebration. We are so grateful and humbled by the recognition and will continue to do everything we can to represent this community well in all ways. The first Nisei Week Festival was held in 1934 and it has been disrupted only twice in its history—the forced evacuation and incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, the community has persevered and maintained its commitment to honor culture and tradition while standing against hate, bigotry, and injustice. Their kindness, devotion, and spirit is awe-inspiring. Congratulations to this year’s class of honorees. It was so nice to meet George Sugimoto, Kellyn Acosta, Brian Kito (Fugetsu-Do), Steve & Patty Nagano, and Bill Watanabe at both the parade and last night’s Nisei Week Foundation Awards Dinner. And a special shoutout to all of the amazing volunteers—we’re already looking forward to next year! #NiseiWeek #80yearsofNiseiWeek #NiseiWeek2022 #LittleTokyo #JAcommunity #JapaneseAmerican #二世週祭 #shibsibs」8月17日 7時31分 - maiashibutani
