Reposted from @thelegendsofmusic The Who playing “Boris The Spider” Live

This was the first song to be released by The Who that wasn’t written by Pete Townshend. After the success of “My Generation”, Pete Townshend wanted his other band members to share the songwriting load and their label was also on board with this plan. They encouraged them to write their own songs and offered each member a £500 advance if they each wrote a song. This inspired John Entwistle to step up to the challenge and he wrote "Boris The Spider," a song about a creepy, crawly spider that drops from the ceiling and meets a sticky end when he gets smashed with a book.

As the story goes, the song was written after Entwistle had been out drinking with the Rolling Stones' bass guitarist, Bill Wyman. They were making up funny names for animals when Entwistle came up with "Boris the Spider". He wrote it in six minutes and, according to Entwistle in a 1971 interview for Crawdaddy, is considered a horror song. Musically, the chorus of "Boris the Spider" was sung in basso profundo by Entwistle, mimicking a popular Spike Milligan character, Throat, from The Goon Show with a middle eight of "creepy crawly" sung in falsetto. According to Pete Townshend in his song-by-song review of Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy for Rolling Stone, it was Jimi Hendrix's favourite Who song.
