I gave her broad strokes. 19 kids, two adults including a teacher. I watched Mazzy absorb the news, be saddened by it, but not shocked. After all, she’s been doing active shooter drills at school since kindergarten. Back when they thought they were protecting themselves from a robber or a wild animal. Now they know. School shootings are not a new concept for our kids. I even remember back in 2018 when her grade participated in the National School Walkout, how proud I was of Mazzy and her friends, who all stood up, walked out and demanded gun control that morning. That was after the school shooting in Parkland. 17 people were killed by a 19-year-old with an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. I had to look it up because there have been so many school shootings since then, I couldn’t remember which one inspired the protest. I remember after Sandy Hook, along with the shock and horror, there was some hope that NOW congress would have to do something. Better background checks. Ban assault weapons. Mandate gun safety training. Initiate a buyback program. But they did nothing. To date, only two states have banned assault weapons. NY and California. Did you know that more preschoolers were killed with a firearm last year than cops? Or that only 1.6% of deaths by firearm were victims killing perpetrators in self defense? And yet here we are protecting gun rights and fetuses. As if those two things are more important than the living children who we are bringing up in a world where they can’t even feel safe at school. I expressed my anger more fully in a blog post today, along with some questions for those who vote for pro-life candidates while ignoring the issue of gun control.
